I am on the road for a long time and have built several amplifiers with highly refined circuitry. I once built a tube amp with minimal distortion to reach a clean tube sound. But it sounded lifeless like a transistor. And then I turned on a spectrum analyzer to document the presence of the tube sound.

In my mind, the main thing about tube sound is your ability to decide for yourself whether you want to please your ears or see a design object with bombastic vacuum tubes in front of you.

Here are some basic postulates:

  • Only a vacuum triode amplifier can create a tube sound.
  • Output stage is built as SE (Single-Ended) only.
  • If you do it systematic, there is a sure guarantee of success.

But here is the simplest rule to be successful:

We have to hear the voice of our ancestors correctly and understand clearly: What is the latest target of your quest, what should the result be? Well-defined physical shapes with dimensions and weight, and then a decisions are cleared up by themselves.

The basis of the basics is a triode only.

The transfer characteristics of a triode is approximately described by a second order function. This leads to a signal with an enrichment of the spectrum by even harmonics.

This is exactly the quintessence of the tube sound. It is up to you to determine the quantitative values ​​of these harmonic components for your individually hearing.

1st step:   Vacuum Tube Reincarnation

Every road has a beginning.

The path into the tube world is complicated enough. You may not always like your home-made devices. However, this is a normal implementation process.

To find out what we like, you have to have it first. Therefore, it makes sense to build a relatively simple thing (a device) at the beginning of your path to perfection.

There was a curious situation with this device before: One day the sound of well-known music tracks became a bit obscured fuzzy, there was some interference at low frequencies.
Is it possible that tired hearing came? It seems i am fine. Checking the tubes didn't help either. The problem has been cleared up by the means of exclusion: you should wipe the headphones plug more often with spiritus.

Summary: Continuous listening to music of the highest quality has refined hearing. Low sound errors are immediately recognizable and uncomfortable.

There are many debates and commnts about tube sound: which is the best? Our senses are represented in such a different, that each of us perceives the world in our own way.
It is probably true, that diverse music genres also require a different flair to fully reveal the author's ideas. Everyone prefers their own individual sound option.

There was born a need to choose the intensity (representation) of the tube sound in the range from flavorless transistor (solid state) tone to a typical triode coloring.

There is an excellent SRPP (Shunt Regulated Push Pull) circuit. However, everything is not so simple here: In some of the cascade modes has the output signal a solid state spectrum (pentode or semiconductor sound). In the special implementation create the SRPP a bright triodes sound.


If you can run such a mode on the device, all debates about the tube sound are over. That was just a fundamental think. The listener can rotate the buttons on these device and tune the best musical sound for his ears.
